Pinsent Masons is set to review its US strategy in a move that will put its current alliance with Thelen Reid Brown Raysman & Steiner under the spotlight.

Pinsents international operations partner Tony Bunch is heading up a working group that will draw up plans in the coming months for the firm’s US strategy.

Bunch said the firm was “open-minded” about a wide range of options, although the firm is known to want to beef up the amount of referrals it receives from the US, as well as broadening its US client roster.

A merger strategy is thought to be highly unlikely, but the firm is considering the case for widening its referral base.

West Coast firm Thelen Reid was an ally of legacy firm Masons, a relationship set up in 2003. Until recently it was primarily known for its infrastructure and construction work, but last year’s merger with intellectual property specialist Brown Raysman Millstein Felder & Steiner has broadened its scope. The US firm also last year announced plans to launch in London.

The news follows the national firm officially launching its international network, Pinsent Masons Luther Group, in December, which sees the firm operate an exclusive alliance with nine firms across Europe.

The network has plans to target further continental jurisdictions, including the Netherlands.

Pinsents has also revamped its London strategy, with its senior management drawing up plans to expand its corporate and banking practice in London. The firm is hoping to expand in Manchester and Scotland.

Bunch told Legal Week: “We have made significant strides in continental Europe and in the Asia-Pacific region and now is the time to consider our relationships in the US.”
