Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has shaken up the organisation of its sector groupings, naming a number of new heads as well as combining some of the teams.

The magic circle firm previously had 15 sector teams, but will now operate with 12 groupings running across its eight practice areas.

One major change sees the creation of a new infrastructure and transport sector group, which consolidates into one team a number of old sector groups: transport and logistics; defence; public procurement; and construction and engineering.

Projects partner Nicholas Bliss — who previously headed up the defence group — and corporate partner Edward Braham have been appointed to co-head the new umbrella group.

The financial institutions group, which includes insurance, will be jointly led by Frankfurt-based corporate partner Gunnar Schuster and City corporate partner Will Lawes.

The telecommunications, media and technology (TMT) sector group will now be overseen by intellectual property partner Norbert Nolte, who is based in Cologne, and London corporate partner Ben Spiers.

City corporate partner Simon Marchant, who previously headed up the TMT group, takes on the energy and natural resources brief.

Freshfields was among the first major UK firms to introduce sector groupings when it formed the cross-practice teams in 2000 as a marketing tool, with sector heads appointed for six-year terms.

The changes come with Freshfields in the process of shaking up its practice groups and restructuring its partnership.
