Bird & Bird has made another European lateral hire with the appointment of corporate partner Harm van Berkum from Simmons & Simmons.

Van Berkum, who focuses on the energy, infrastructure and telecoms sectors, spent several years at Simmons’ Rotterdam arm, prior to which he led Loyens & Loeff’s London-based corporate finance practice.

Bird & Bird’s operation in The Hague now has around 55 lawyers, including 14 partners.

The addition of van Berkum follows the arrival of contentious intellectual property partner Marc van Wijngaarden, who joined from Dutch patent firm Arnold & Siedsma last month.

In November, the TMT leader beefed up its City capabilities with the hire of three partners from Barlow Lyde & Gilbert, including commercial and technology group head Simon Shooter.

Significant continental developments include the launch of a corporate finance practice in Madrid with the hire of Araoz & Rueda partner Andres Lorrio last month. The firm also strengthened its German finance practice with the hire of Gassner Stockmann & Kollegen partner Bertold Frisch.
